Raoul Wallenberg Raoul Wallenberg (1912 – 1947?) was a Swedish businessman and diplomat. He helped save about 100,000 Hungarian Jews from being killed by the Nazis in 1944, during the Holocaust in World War II. He often risked his life, and later won worldwide admiration for his heroic eforts.

He was born on August 4, 1912 and his birthplace is Sweden. Raoul is also well known as, Swedish diplomat who saved 100,000 Hungarian Jews in WWII by issuing protective passports and housing many Jews in designated Swedish territories. In his visa application Wallenberg listed « Ritter [Baronet] von Wahl » as one of his main contacts in Hungary. This was certainly Henrik de Wahl, the managing director of the Manfred Weiss A.G. who – like Salén and Björkman – in 1944 would play a key role in ensuring Raoul Wallenberg’s selection for the humanitarian mission to Budapest.

With the support of the World Jewish Congress and the American War Refugee Board, the Swedish Foreign Ministry sent Wallenberg to Budapest in July 1944 to help protect the 200,000 Jews who remained in the capital.
