Back to Top of Page. “Hippolytus” (Gr: “Hippolytos” ) is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, first produced at the Athens City Dionysia in 428 BCE, where it won first prize (as part of a trilogy). It is based on the myth of Hippolytus, son of Theseus, and how a series of misunderstandings and the meddling of the gods result in his death and that of his step-mother, Phaedra.

3 There was a shrine of Aphrodite on the Acropolis near a hero-sanctuary dedicated to Hippolytus. The shrine was so called from its proximity to the sanctuary, though here Euripides makes a closer connection between them. The play Hippolytus by the Greek tragedian Euripides (c. 480–406 BC) was first performed in Athens in 428 BC as part of the trilogy that won first prize in the competition. Of the more than ninety plays Euripides is believed to have written, nineteen have survived, as well as some fragments of his other plays. In that earlier Hippolytus (called by later writers Hippoly-tus Veiled), Euripides fashioned a Phaedra who was neither 2 T 155–7 TrGF.
