Matrescence, the becoming of a mother, is one of the most transformative times in our lives. There are countless decisions to be made while also experience physical, emotional, psychological and lifestyle changes that are at the same time wonderful and terrifying.

Matrescence is the term used that describes the process a woman goes through as she transitions into becoming a mother. Originally coined by Dana Raphael PhD in 1973, (also coined the more commonly used term doula) it is now becoming a hot topic of discussion, and I personally believe, it’s the beginning of a social movement for change.

The word ‘matrescence’ describes the process of becoming a mother. The late American psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Stern, described it in an article in The New York Times as a time of an intense identity transition: “Giving birth to a new identity can be as demanding as giving birth to a baby.” The Birth of the Mother In the 1970s Dana Rapheal coined the term matrescence.
